Places - Buidings and Institutions of the 4th Ward


Churches played a very important role in the 4th Ward. They organized the community and bound it together.

Schools and Hospitals

There were a number of significant buildings in the 4th Ward

  • Rex Hospital - This important institution began in the Rex homesite at 17 W. South Street
  • St Lukes Home for The Aged
  • Washington Graded School -The first grade school for African American children in NC, 137 W. South Street

Restaurants, Clubs and Hotels

  • Paradise Club - a center of 4th Ward nightlife in the 1940's, 200 S. West Street
  • The Ebron Hotel - 430 McDowell Street
